Health Promotion

My Goal: To empower your growth, through education, toward a preventative frame of mind where YOU are in charge of YOUR health, YOUR lifestyle, and YOUR healthcare.

We live in a society that subsists on a large quantities of poor quality food which is low in vital nutrients and fiber and usually loaded with a high fat content. It has been expressed in many ways that Americans are the most overfed yet the most undernourished humans on the planet earth! Check your BMI now! The minority of us eat a balanced diet with appropriate selections from the U.S.D.A. food "pyramid". The American Cancer Society and the American Diabetes Association recommend that we have at least 30 grams of fiber in our diet, but the best of us probably average 10 grams of fiber!!

This lack of fruits, vegetables, and fiber - and hence vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients necessary for the full vital function of the healthy human body - lead to malfunction and disease over time!

It has been proven that a change in lifestyle with improved nutrition and regular exercise can even begin to reverse the ravages of our past transgressions against our body! Good nutrition and nutritional supplementation can help prevent disease processes common to our western society. Prevention is far superior to treatment of a disease process already destroying normal body function! A good analogy would be walking around a large pit in the ground by careful planning and navigation rather than working twice as hard to get out of that hole once we've fallen in due to our own indifference!

Key Benefits of Health Promotion and Healthy Lifestyle:

bulletImproved Nutrition - fortify your daily diet with nutrients, antioxidants, and micronutrients to make up for the nutrition your food lacks. Add the high protein, low fat Wonderful Benefits of Soy to your diet which have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer!
bulletRenewed sense of Vitality - prevent or improve Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and Depression
bulletLowered Cholesterol - prevent Heart Disease and Stroke.
bulletWeight Loss - prevent Obesity induced Diabetes, Joint Destruction, and Heart Disease - Check your BMI now!
bulletLowered Blood Glucose - improved control of Diabetes.

Some Examples:

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. Disability caused by heart disease after a heart attack can destroy an individual emotionally and a family financially in very short order! Add cigarette smoking to underlying heart disease and you are a walking time bomb!! The expenditure of money on correction of established heart disease is astronomical - prevention makes sense - it pays for itself!!

Elevated cholesterol is epidemic in our society. Canned, boxed, and frozen convenience foods and drive through "fast" foods which are stripped of their nutritional elements in the manufacturing process. Then add salt, partially hydrogenated fats linked to heart disease, and preservatives to this nutritional "wasteland" and you have a leading cause of this silent killer. Add lack of exercise due to today's demanding schedules to this killer and the end result is a sure pathway to heart disease and disabling strokes. If you're a smoker, which has been proven to speed the plaquing process of arteries, then you're on the fast train to certain disaster! Prevention makes sense - why pay thousands of dollars a year in doctor visits and cholesterol medications when prevention with a good diet and nutritional supplementation are far more economical?!

Did you know:

  1. The average cost of the most used cholesterol lowering medications is more than $60 per month!!
  2. These medications can cause liver damage and failure - they require regular monitoring of liver functions by your physician - added expenses. One (Baycol) has recently been removed from the market for just such complications leading to deaths!
  3. The average heart bypass surgery, frequently done unnecessarily, costs $40,000 dollars and is fraught with complications and often a worse lifestyle after surgery?? To make matters even worse, many studies show no improvement in long term survival - the individual may have improved quality of life, but will live no longer than without this expensive operation - prevention really starts to make sense!!

Change your attitude and outlook - think health promotion!

Fatigue / Chronic Fatigue / Fibromyalgia are major disablers in today's society! How many individuals do you know among family and friends who are always tired or need stimulants like caffeine to make it through the day?? Worse yet, all of us know someone who has chronic fatigue to the point that they are unable to function fully in the way that they would like to. Fibromyalgia robs people of functional lives with daily aches, pains, and fatigue! See our Fibromyalgia Article for more info.

Poor nutrition is often the culprit and can be easily improved for many of these individuals! The benefits of adding soy for protein, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties as well as adding supplements for vitamins and minerals lacking from the basic diet can make the difference to help restore normal function and vitality! Prevention makes sense!

Did you know:

  1. Long-standing chronic fatigue can lead to depression due to the frustration of not being able to live a normal lifestyle!

Obesity is rampant in the U.S. - look around at any public setting - the mall, a restaurant, a sporting event - both adults and a rapidly growing number of children are at risk of adverse health outcomes! It has been estimated that over 1/3 of adults and up to 1/4 of children are obese (20% over ideal body weight)! Check your BMI now! This places them at risk for - high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, arthritis of the large joints, increases in many forms of Cancer - all because of their weight! Poor nutritional choices, eating habits, and lack of regular exercise are the major contributing factors to this preventable and treatable disease.

Did you know:

  1. Losing just 10% of your body weight can reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels while reducing joint aches and pains?!
  2. Obesity doubles your risk of becoming diabetic, and the underlying resistance to your bodies own insulin starts to damage blood vessels and nerves even before blood sugars become elevated and diabetes can be diagnosed and treated.
  3. 25% of osteoarthritis is from being overweight and more overweight individuals have joint replacement surgery?!
  4. Obesity is linked to increases in several types of common cancers, including breast, colon, and prostate?!
  5. Increases the risk of sleep apnea which magnifies the risk of heart disease?!

Depression destroys lives and relationships by preventing full functionality. Living "in a fog", as it is frequently described, robs you of energy to be active, disturbs sexual function, disturbs normal sleep patterns, and affects your bodies' weight control mechanisms. Long term frustration with poor daily coping skills and overall reduced functionality can ultimately lead to thoughts of ending your life if not properly treated by medical professionals. Why wait until this disabling illness reaches such a dire consequence - prevention of poor functionality again is far cheaper than treatment of an established disease - it makes sense!

Did you know:

  1. Nutrasweet (Aspartame) - a common sweetener in many diet sodas and foods has been linked to depressive disorders and mental fuzziness and confusion, especially if used in higher quantities!
  2. Depression is the leading cause of suicide!
  3. The average cost of newer antidepressants is $75 per month!
  4. Anti-depressants can cause many side effects - weight gain, sexual dysfunction, heartbeat irregularities, and anxiety to name a few!

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing disease processes in the U.S. - it is considered an epidemic, especially in young kids who are overweight couch potatoes!! 16 million people, or 6% of the population, have diabetes. Risk factors are: Physical inactivity, being overweight, being a member of certain ethnic groups, family history, and increasing age.

The side effects and damage to your body caused by diabetes start much earlier (some research now shows 10-15 years before) than when the blood sugar is elevated and may be detected clinically by your physician. Insulin Resistance is the root of these problems, and we now know that the blood vessel and nerve damage known to be caused by diabetes, again starts before the clinical diagnosis of diabetes! This is scary - damage to your body before you know it is ocurring!!!

bulletOverweight - check your BMI now
bulletFamily History of Diabetes
bulletElevated triglycerides - especially after eating

Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in the U.S. by causing diabetic retinopathy. It is also the number one cause of kidney failure, dialysis, and ultimately kidney transplantation in the U.S.! Type 2 diabetes also increases cardiovascular risk by causing significant metabolic abnormalities including increased insulin levels and lipid levels which increase blood pressure and hasten hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

Why not manage your diabetes with healthful measures like proper nutrition, weight control, and exercise along with supplementation and increased fiber to minimize the need for medications and insulin??

Did you know:

  1. Weight loss and exercise can treat and stop the deadly insulin resistance and prevent the development of out and out diabetes! Get going!!
  2. Insulin itself is a "growth hormone" and can cause increased appetite, weight gain, and is implicated in progression of cholesterol plaquing of the arteries?! Avoid this at all costs!!
